Sharada Peeth

A temple and centre of learning dedicated to the goddess Sharada.

Sharada Peeth was one of the most famous places of learning in medieval South Asia, and Kashmir itself was sometimes called Sharada Desh, the land of Sharada. The Sharada script takes its name from the goddess. Today only the ruined stone temple remains, close to the Line of Control.

  • Al-Biruni, writing in the 11th century, mentions it as a revered site.
  • Kashmiri Pandits have long sought access for pilgrimage across the Line of Control.
