Lalitaditya Muktapida

The most celebrated Karkota king.

Kalhana presents Lalitaditya as a conquering hero whose campaigns reached across northern India and beyond. Whatever their true extent, his reign brought wealth into the Valley, paid for the temple at Martand and the new capital at Parihaspora, and became a model later Kashmiri writers returned to.

Facts

  • Chinese court records mention an embassy from a Kashmiri king of this period, usually identified with him.
  • Kalhana says he died far from home on a campaign in the north, though the story is uncertain.
