Suyya

The engineer who reshaped the Valley's rivers.

Suyya was Avantivarman's engineer. Faced with floods and famine, he cleared rocks that choked the Jhelum, moved the meeting point of the Jhelum and the Sindh, and built embankments that turned swamp into farmland. Kalhana says grain prices fell sharply as a result.

Facts

  • The town of Sopore takes its name from Suyyapura, the settlement named after him.
  • Kalhana tells that Suyya was found as a baby in a clay pot, which he links to his name.
