Pandrethan Temple

A small Shiva temple that stood in a pool of water.

Pandrethan was once Puranadhishthana, the old capital, and tradition links it with the Srinagari of Ashoka's time. The small stone temple that survives here was built in the early 10th century by Meru, a minister of King Partha, and was designed to stand in a tank of water.

  • Its ceiling is carved with a large lotus and figures.
  • It shows the classic Kashmiri pyramidal roof in stone, the type of roof usually lost at larger sites.
