Avantivarman

Founder of the Utpala dynasty and patron of scholars.

Avantivarman came to the throne after years of unrest and is remembered for rebuilding. Kalhana describes a peaceful reign, great public works carried out by his engineer Suyya, and a court that welcomed poets and thinkers.

Facts

  • The literary theorist Anandavardhana, author of the Dhvanyaloka, is named by Kalhana as one of the scholars at his court.
  • He founded the town of Avantipura, today's Avantipora.
