Set up in 1948 as the University of Jammu and Kashmir and split into separate Jammu and Kashmir universities in 1969, its Hazratbal campus sits between the lake and the hills. It houses the Centre of Central Asian Studies and the Iqbal Library, and it has stayed open through long periods when little else in the Valley did.
Facts
- Allama Iqbal Library holds several hundred thousand volumes, among them Persian and Sanskrit manuscripts.
