Nadim began writing in Urdu and turned to Kashmiri, bringing free verse, the sonnet and everyday political subjects into a language whose poetry had been shaped for centuries by the mystical lyric. His Bombur ta Yambarzal, staged in 1953, is generally counted the first Kashmiri opera.
