Bakshi took office in 1953 after Sheikh Abdullah was dismissed and held it until 1963. His government built roads, schools and hospitals, made schooling free up to university level and subsidised rice, while tying the state much more closely to India. His years in office are also remembered for the suppression of opposition and for elections whose results were not credible.
