Shalimar Bagh

Jahangir's garden of terraces, fountains and water channels.

Jahangir laid out Shalimar Bagh for his wife Nur Jahan. A central channel carries water from the hills down through three terraces, over carved stone chutes and past rows of fountains and chinar trees. Shah Jahan added the pavilion of black stone on the highest terrace, once reserved for the women of the court.

Facts

  • A canal runs from Dal Lake to the garden, so the court could arrive by boat.
  • Its design became a model for later gardens, including one of the same name in Lahore.
