Nishat Bagh

The largest Mughal garden in Kashmir.

Asif Khan, the brother of Nur Jahan, built Nishat Bagh, the garden of delight, as twelve terraces climbing from the lake towards the Zabarwan mountains. Water tumbles down the centre over stone cascades, and the view back over Dal Lake to the Pir Panjal range is one of the most famous in Kashmir.

  • The twelve terraces are traditionally linked to the twelve signs of the zodiac.
  • A well-known story says Shah Jahan, envious of the garden, had its water supply cut off for a time.
