Maharaja Gulab Singh

Founder of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Gulab Singh, a Dogra from Jammu, rose in the service of Ranjit Singh and was made Raja of Jammu. After the First Anglo-Sikh War he acquired Kashmir from the British under the Treaty of Amritsar and became the first Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir.

  • His general Zorawar Singh had earlier extended Dogra control over Ladakh and into Baltistan.
